SCOTLAND SENIORS LOSE TO ENGLAND

Aberdeen's Sheena Wood had a great win (including a hole in One) over the new Senior British women's amateur champion Catherine Rawthore and Tain's Anne Ryan beat Lulu Housman who tied for third in that tournament but it was not enough to prevent England taking another step towards being crowned champions today (Thursday) in the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Huddersfield Golf Club.
England, who hammered defending champions Ireland on Day 1, followed that up with a 6-2 win over the Scots for whom the writing was on the wall when they lost the foursomes 3-0.

This is the message that West Vets Captain Anna has sent ---

Super Scottish Seniors win in Austria!!!!
In a very very close match against Belgium, the Scots triumphed 3.5 to 1.5. The 4somes pairing of Alison Bartlett and Alex Glennie won at the 19th, Sheena Wood played the back 9 in 3 under par to win on the very tricky 18th. With equal nerves of steel, Mary Smith also triumphed on the 18th. Anne Ryan was under the cosh from the start and lost 6 and 5 but by then the match was secured and as is the custom in this tournament, Fiona De Vries's match was declared a half ( even tho she was 1 up after 17.
Captain Anna Telfer is over the moon and "vewy vewy pwoud" of her players "it was a match of 2 halves but thankfully we played the second half so much better"
Next up is Spain for the play-off for 5th and 6th place.

MESSAGE FROM CAPTAIN ANNA AT THE EUROPEAN SENIORS

As you can imagine it was fantastic to be playing golf today - and in the sunshine too!!!!
Three of the very wet holes had been shortened to par 3s and the 18th was cut to a par 4. This didn't make it any easier and there were preferred lies in operation.
The Scottish team played really well despite the difficult and wet conditions and achieved the target we had set ourselves. This was to finish in the top flight of 8 teams and we actually finished 7th. Unfortunately because of the curtailed tournament, there are only flights of 4 and so we are in the 2nd group. Tomorrow we play Belgium, starting at 10:06am.
Today's top performer was Sheena Wood, who played superbly. She was one over after 15 holes, but 2 double bogeys at 16 and 18 spoilt what had been an excellent round. These are both testing holes over water and caused many a high score. Alison Bartlett also had a good round - very steady play. The others were disappointed in their scores but I can't emphasise just how difficult it was - especially for the early grouping of Mary, Anne and Fiona. They were out when the ground was even wetter with the dew.
Anyway, on to the match play rounds now and I'm confident we will do well

ALISON BARTLETT TAKES THE SCOTTISH MATCHPLAY TITLE

Alison Bartlett -- Strokeplay and Matchplay Champion
From the SLGA Website:

Alison Bartlett (pictured left - courtesy of the SLGA) confirmed she is the best senior player in Scotland by completing the Strokeplay and Matchplay Championship double at Elgin Golf Club.

The Royal Dornoch player was never headed in the Strokeplay Championship and she completed an impressive run in the Matchplay with a 3 and 1 win over West Vet Aex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) in the 18 hole final.

One up at the turn in the final, the highlight for Bartlett was an eagle three at the 404 yard tenth. Glennie won the 14th to reduce the deficit to one but wins at the 15th and 17th secured victory.

In the semi-finals, Bartlett had a close one hole win over Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose). All square with two to play, the Northern Counties golfer won the 17th in par and the 18th was halved.

In the other tie, Glennie was a 2 and 1 winner over Fiona De Vries (St Rule). Two down after three holes, back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth and more wins at the seventh and eighth put Glennie in control.

In the Nett Handicap Semi Finals Margot Barr won against West Vets Vice Captain Marion Stewart (Kilmacolm)  and Rita Dee beat Emma Wilson (Elie and Earlsferry)

Rita Dee from Kingsknowe Golf Club defeated Margot Barr (Nairn) in the Nett Championship Final 4&3.

In the semi-finals, Bartlett, a two-time Strokeplay Champion, meets Kathleen Sutherland. The Royal Montrose member beat West Vet Liz Keohone (Loudoun Gowf) by 4 and 2 in the quarter-finals.

In the bottom half of the draw, Fiona de Vries (St Rule) lines-up against West Vet Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie). - pictured left .

SCOTTISH SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP - LIZ KEOHONE AND ALEX GLENNIE ARE RUNNERS UP

ALISON BARTLETT KEEPS COOL - AND WINS SCOTTISH SENIOR STROKE TITLE

Royal Dornoch's Alison Bartlett, winner of the Northern Counties women's championship a few weeks, added an even more prestigious title to her collection when she won the Scottish senior women's amateur stroke play championship for the first time at Elgin Golf Club today.
Third in the championship three years ago, when she also was the first-round leader, Alison was not headed on this occasion - although it was a close run thing in the end.
Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) and Alison were level at six over par for the tournament with three to play, one shot ahead of West Vet Liz Keohone (Loudoun Gowf)
The Royal Dornoch player, secretary of the Northern Counties Ladies Golf Association, kept her cool under pressure and parred the last three holes.
That made the winning difference in the final analysis. Noreen bogeyed the 16th and double bogeyed the 17th. The Dunbar player did finish with a birdie but it was too late to repair the damaged.
Bartlett's rounds of 75 and 79 for 10 over par 154 won her the title by two shots from four players on 156 - Noreen Fenton (76-80), Liz Keohone (77-79), Anne Ryan (Tain) (79-77) and West Vet Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) 77 79.
Defending champion West Vet Captain Anne Telfer (Milngavie) finished down the field with scores of 82 and 86 for 168. She did not make leading 16 who will now contest the Scottish senior women's match-play championship at the same venue over the next two days.

WEST VETS WIN THE MID WEST TROPHY

West and Midland Vets
West Vets Team

Midland Vets Team
Fourteen very hardy Vets took to the fairways at Ralston GC today, Monday June 9th in the match for players of handicap 10 and over.
As the photos show, we started out in sunshine but soon the rain started and unfortunately it persisted for the rest of the day.
Lynn McColl  - Soaked !!
Lynn McColl decided it was too warm for waterproofs at first and by the time she thought that maybe she ought to put them on......... well she was wet through by then and decided not to bother!!!!!
Ralston GC looked after us superbly and despite the awful conditions, Midland Vets thoroughly enjoyed the course - and the lovely meal afterwards.
West Vets were superb and ran out resounding winners by the margin of 6-1.

Anna receives the Trophy from Liz
Captain Anna Telfer proudly received the Mid West Trophy from her counterpart, Liz Fertacz.

So, 2 matches played and 2 matches won! No pressure then Marion, on you and your foursomes team at Gullane in August!!! Best of luck to the team.

Bacon rolls, coffee and tea and plenty of chat and catching-up were enjoyed before the serious business of the day took place.
Sally Coster - President of the SVLGA kindly came down to act as Starter and play duly commenced at 12 noon. To the surprise ( and relief) of all, the weather stayed dry with not too much wind.
The overall result proved to be a resounding victory for West Vets who very happily retained the Elise Duncan Trophy

LORRAINE CAMPBELL WINS THE 2014 WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP

Anne Terrey (Bronze Champion) and Lorraine Campbell (2014 West Vets Champion)
WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP 2014
The Championship was held at Renfrew GC once again and our thanks go to them for their courtesy of the course and their kind hospitality over the two days.

There were 16 qualifiers again this year for our annual Championship. All matches were keenly contested and the golf was of a very high standard. The shock of the 1st round was the defeat of former champion, May Hughes (Lanark) by Cathy Morton (Eastwood) at the 18th but Cathy proved to be a steely and determined competitor.
The quarter finals were played on the Thursday afternoon and saw the field reduced to four players. Both semi finals on Friday morning were extremely close and tense affairs. Lorraine Campbell (Cardross) eventually edged out the number 1 seed Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) at the 18th. Meanwhile in the other tie - which swung one way and then the other- Linda McDougall (Greenock) holed a downhill 5 footer on the 18th to take the tie into extra holes. However a par 4 at the first was good enough to take Anna Telfer (Milngavie) through to the final.
Some Spectators

The final was played in glorious sunshine although disappointingly there were very few supporters or spectators to watch the game. Anna took an early lead and was 2 up after 3 holes but a chip in at the 6th spurred Lorraine on and she rallied to go 3 up after 13. However a mini fight back saw Anna reduce the deficit to one hole as they stood on the 17th tee. Both had good drives, but Lorraine's superior length enabled her to hit a 5 iron ( and in her words " my sweetest and best struck shot of the day") to about 10 feet. She calmly holed her birdie putt and emerged a worthy winner and our West Vets Champion of 2014. Lorraine will now go to Strathmore GC in September to play in the Scottish Vets Championship and I'm sure we all wish her the very best of luck in that competition.

Anna congratulates Lorraine on her win

Anne Terrey and Ann Colthart with referee Vice Captain Marion Stewart
Anne is presented with her Bronze Championship Trophy from Captain Anna

There were 4 qualifiers for the Bronze Championship and unfortunately the final was rather one sided. Anne Terrey (Greenock) was 3 up after 6 holes against the 2013 champion Ann Colthart (Dalmally). Then a blistering run of 5 consecutive holes won from the 8th to the 12th saw Anne win by 7/6.
